Reset HP Printer

A while back I purchased a refill kit for my Ink jet printer because I had planned on printing a lot of photos and such because I loved the quality of my new HP printer compared to my old Lexmark. Yesterday, I decided to refill the ink cartridges because I was getting a little low and I needed to print 4 8×10 photos with my printer. The refilling went fine, although a little messy, but I got it refilled and the photos printed. The only bad thing is when i put the cartridges back in, the HP printer remembered the cartridge and its ink level. So it kept reporting that I was low, when I was not. I think the printer would continue to print even if I did not reset it, but I wanted to use it to estimate how much ink I had left until I need to refill again.

So I did a little research and found out that the ink cartridges for my printer (The C8727A #27 for Black and the C8728A #28 for 3 Color Cartridge) have a handy dandy serial number encoded on the chips that the printer reads and remembers the last 3 used and the ink level. I would kinda assume so if you stick a photo ink cartridge in there, that when you put the old one in, it will know its ink level, along with the photo cartridge when you put it back in there later on in life. Either way, this was getting in my way.

Resetting the cartridges wasn’t hard, just annoying. It requires taping off some contact points on the cartridge and reinserting the thing 3 times. Below are the instructions I used in order to make my printer think it is a new cartridge. You will have to use the image below the instructions to know exactly which pin I am talking about on the different cartridges. They are not actually colored in real life, but you should have known that.
Turn printer on and take the cartridge out of the printer. I took the paper out also, otherwise it will print an alignment sheet every time you put the cartridges back in. Letting it not print one did not seem to bother the printer or cause the instructions to not work.
Cover the pin marked in Red (see below) with tape on the cartridge you refilled. You can do both the Color and Black cartridges at the same time if you like.
Put cartridge back in printer and shut access door and let the printer do its thing. Eventually it will stop making noises and indicate an error. Ignore it.
Open cartridge access door and remove cartridge again. Add another piece of tape covering the pin marked Blue (see below). Both the Red and Blue marked pins need to be covered with tape. Be careful to not cover any other pins. Also, please note that the pin marked Blue is different for the Black and Color cartridges (I screwed this up the first time).
Put cartridge back in and shut access door. Let printer do its thing until it stops making noises.
Open access door again and remove cartridges for a final time. Remove all tape covering the pins and return the cartridge back into the printer.
This time add some paper and print an alignment sheet in order to let the printer align the print heads properly.
If you check your ink level, they should be marked as full. If not, sorry, I don’t know what happened. Try again.

The pins for the Black cartridge will work on the following cartridges: C6656A (#56) or C8727A (#27)
The pins for the Color cartridge will work on the following cartridges: C6657A (#57), C6658A (#58 Photo), or C8728A (#28)

Good luck resetting your ink levels.

Tip : Vista Gadgets

Today I completed a Vista Gadget called SurfWatch. You can download it here. I learnt a lot while creating this Gadget. My Javascript skills are are a

lot better now, and of course I learnt some of the Gadget API. Here's some tips that might be useful to you if you are writing gadgets also.

1. Use Visual Studio Codename 'Orcas'. The intellisense on javascript makes it extremely useful.

2. When using flyouts, set the style of the page body tags to remove the padding and margin, otherwise your flyout doesn't line up with your gadget.

3. You can also use the g:background tag for your flyout window to ensure transparency.

4. You can set data and call functions in the flyout from your main gadget window by calling against it's DOM. For example, if you had a textbox in your flyout, you would access it like this:

var flyoutDOM = System.Gadget.Flyout.document;
var myText = flyoutDOM.getElementById('myText');

Likewise, if you have registered functions in your DOM in your flyout, they can be called the same way. This allows for a form of communication between your two gadget windows.

5. Docked and undocked versions of your gadget actually run under the same html file. If you want them to look different and have different contents, keep this in mind when designing your gadget.

6. Emailing gadgets is tricky! Since they are essentially a zip file, most email servers will detect that the attachment contains items with Javascript, and may zap it. Not sure how to get around this yet!

7. There is a mime-type for gadgets:
application/x-windows-gadget

Gadget Tips

Things to consider

When you are buying some electronic gadget that is going to be used all around the globe, ponder the following items to avoid several technical headaches.

Voltage
There are two different voltages used in the world. Broadly speaking, 240V is used in Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa, and 110V in Americas and Japan. There are of course some exceptions, for example, in Brazil and Belize, both voltages are used, and in some countries the voltage is 115V or 230V. The frequency differs a little bit, too. The frequency of 240V currency is 50Hz and 110V uses 60Hz.

Make sure that every AC adapter accepts voltage in between 100-240V and both frequencies. This is the case with most of laptops and mobile phones, but PDA chargers, for example, may accept only one type of voltage. If you are not able to get universal adapter, buy a voltage converter. They are cheap but unfortunately quite heavy and sometimes unreliable.

Plugs
The different voltage and frequency is not enough, but there are several different plugs used in the world. 110V countries use two or three flat bladed plugs. In some countries only two bladed plugs are used. The situation is worse with 240V countries as there are several different plugs:

  • two round pins plug, used in Europe, Asia and Africa
  • three round pins plug, used in Asia and Africa
  • three rectangular blades plug, used in Great Britain and Commonwealth
  • three oblique flat blades plug, used in Oceania

There are several minor plug types for South Africa, Lesotho, El Salvador, Maldives, and Switzerland, among others.

You can buy adapters from the airports and borrow them from hotel receptions. The most common plug types are bundled to a universal adapter, sold in travel and department stores. One solution is to buy different cords between the adapter and the socket. This is preferable if you are planning to stay longer, as adapters have tendency to fit badly to the socket or plug and thus cause unwanted breaks in electricity supply. This happens quite easily, for example, when you move your laptop in the hotel room.

Telephone Plugs
As you may have guessed, telephone plugs are also different in various parts of the world. Fortunately most of the hotel telephones have a separate modem jack that is universal (RJ-11). So buy a cable whose both ends fit to the modem jack in the laptop and you are quite safe.

Mobile Networks
World has also several mobile networks. GSM is the most widely deployed, available in every continent. Japan is one of the rare countries that do not have GSM network. In some other countries, especially in Americas, the GSM coverage is limited to the bigger cities. All the other mobile networks, such as CDMA and TDMA, are more local and they cannot offer true global mobility.

To make things more complicated, GSM networks use three different frequencies: 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. Fortunately modern phones are able to use them all and they can automatically switch to correct frequency. Check also with your local operator that they have roaming agreements for every country you are planning to visit. If the operator does not have agreement in place, your phone will be dead even if there is a network. You can only make emergency calls. Check the situation with your operator, usually the information is available on operator's web site.

Registry Hacking

Display legal notice on startup:

Wanna tell your friends about the do's and dont's in your computer when they login in your absence. Well you can do it pretty easily by displaying a legal notice at system start up.
REGEDIT
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
"legalnoticecaption"="enter your notice caption"
"legalnoticetext"="enter your legal notice text"

Automatic Administrator Login

Well here's the trick which you can use to prove that Windows XP is not at all secure as multi-user operating system. Hacking the system registry from any account having access to system registry puts you in to the administrator account.
REGEDIT 4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"

No Shutdown

Wanna play with your friends by removing the shutdown option from start menu in their computer.
Just hack it down !!!
Regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
"NoClose"="DWORD:1"

Menu Delays

Another minor and easy tweak to remove any delay from menus sliding out. For this you will need to use regedit (open regedit by going to Start -> Run..., then typing 'regedit' and pressing enter). The key you need to change is located in HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. The actual key is called MenuShowDelay - all you have to do is change the value to 0. Remember, you will have to re-boot your computer for this tweak to take effect.

Increasing options in add/remove programs

Not a fan of MSN Messenger? don't want Windows Media Player on your system? Fair enough, but if you go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, by default none of Windows XP's 'built in' programs are visible. it's fairly easy to change, though... just open the file X:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf (where X: is the drive letter where Windows XP is installed) in Notepad. You should see a section of the file something like this:

[Components]
NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7
Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7
iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7
com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,hide,7
dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7
IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7
TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,hide,2
msmq=msmqocm.dll,MsmqOcm,msmqocm.inf,,6
ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7
fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7
AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7
IEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,ieaccess.inf,,7

This is a list of all components installed at the moment. I've taken the example of MSN Messenger - the program entry called 'msmsgs', third-last line. You can see the word 'hide' highlighted - this is the string which tells Windows not to display the component in the Add/Remove Programs list. Fix this up by simply deleting the word 'hide' like so:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

To this:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

Now, after restarting, you should be able to see MSN Messenger in the Add/Remove Programs list. If you want to be able to quickly view and remove all components, simply open the sysoc.inf file and do a global find and replace for the word ",hide" and replace it with a single comma ",".

Automatically Kill Programs At Shutdown

don't you hate it when, while trying to shut down, you get message boxes telling you that a program is still running? Making it so that Windows automatically kills applications running is a snap. Simply navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop directory in the Registry, then alter the key AutoEndTasks to the value 1.

Speeding Up Share Viewing:

This is a great tweak. Before I found it, I was always smashing my head against the table waiting to view shares on other computers. Basically, when you connect to another computer with Windows XP, it checks for any Scheduled tasks on that computer - a fairly useless task, but one that can add up to 30 seconds of waiting on the other end - not good! Fortunately, it's fairly easy to disable this process. First, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace in the Registry. Below that, there should be a key called {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. Just delete this, and after a restart, Windows will no longer check for scheduled tasks - mucho performance improvement!

Create a Shortcut to Lock Your Computer

Leaving your computer in a hurry but you don’t want to log off? You can double-click a shortcut on your desktop to quickly lock the keyboard and display without using CTRL+ALT+DEL or a screen saver. To create a shortcut on your desktop to lock your computer: Right-click the desktop. Point to New, and then click Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard opens. In the text box, type the following: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation Click Next. Enter a name for the shortcut. You can call it "Lock Workstation" or choose any name you like. Click Finish. You can also change the shortcut's icon (my personal favorite is the padlock icon in shell32.dll). To change the icon: Right click the shortcut and then select Properties. Click the Shortcut tab, and then click the Change Icon button. In the Look for icons in this file text box, type: Shell32.dll. Click OK. Select one of the icons from the list and then click OK You could also give it a shortcut keystroke such CTRL+ALT+L. This would save you only one keystroke from the normal command, but it could be more convenient.

Instant Properties

Here's a quick little trick you'll like. If you need to get the properties for something (like an icon, for instance), just hold down your ALT key and double-click it. Instant properties!

Try it with "My Computer" or one of your regular desktop icons.

And yes, I know that you can also right-click an item and select Properties from the resulting menu. I just thought this was cooler.

Multiple Open Icon for Windows XP

It gets pretty annoying when you have to open several different documents or applications one at a time when you’re working on a large project. For each program or document, you have to wade through all of your folders to find it and double-click it. Well, guess what! You can create ONE icon that will do all of the opening you need!

First, right-click on an empty space on your desktop. From the menu that pops up, select New then click Text Document.

This creates a new icon on the desktop. Rename this icon with anything you want and add “.bat” to the end. If you get an error message, click Yes. Then right-click the icon and in the menu that appears, click Edit. Now you should have Notepad open. We will use this to indicate what programs or documents to start. That takes care of the easy part.

For this tip, I will create a rather basic Multiple Open Icon just to show you how it works for each type of file. The easiest thing to do is have the Multiple Open Icon open a web page. On the first line in Notepad type “start www.worldstart.com.” If we save the changes and click the Multiple Open Icon you created on your desktop, it will now open Internet Explorer and go to www.worldstart.com.

Next, we will start a program from a shortcut that is already on the desktop using the .bat file. There are two keys to remember though. First, the name of the shortcut cannot have spaces; if it does, you must rename the shortcut. Second, the shortcut must be on the desktop of only the current user, not all users. To make sure that it is, right-click the shortcut, drag it to any place on the screen, and click Copy Here in the menu that is displayed.

Now, open the .bat file in Notepad again and on the second line type “start ShortcutName” where ShortcutName is the name of your shortcut. For this example, it's Messenger.

Finally, we will use this .bat file to also open a document of some kind. First you need to find the document in your computer’s memory. Most are stored in the My Documents folder. Once you find the document using Windows Explorer, right-click it and drag it onto the desktop. In the menu that appears, click Create Shortcuts Here.

Rename the shortcut so that it has no spaces. Again, edit the .bat file in notepad. On the next line type “start ShortcutName.” Same as before - ShortcutName is replaced with the name of the shortcut you created. (Use the same method to start a program that is not already on the desktop.)

Save the changes to the .bat file and close Notepad. Now double-click the .bat icon and it should go to www.worldstart.com, run the application, and open the Word document. All at once. Can you believe it?

Now, any of the additional shortcuts we created on the desktop can be hidden by right clicking them, going to Properties, the General tab, and checking the box for Hidden. When you click Apply, the icon will disappear as long as you do not have your computer set to show hidden files, and the .bat file will still work.

It’s a lot of work, but once you have the .bat icon set-up, it will save a lot of time opening several different items.

Find & Replace

Have you ever messed something up in a long document? Maybe you misspelled your company's name or perhaps you stuck the number "7" in when it should have been "8".

Well, most people when faced with this problem go through the entire document line by line and manually replace all the mistakes. Of course, as they are doing it they're probably thinking there has to be a better way.

They're right!

Most word processors have a feature called Find & Replace. It's normally under the Edit menu as "Find & Replace" or just "Replace".

Click the Find & Replace feature in your word processor and you'll get a screen that lets you specify the item you want to replace and a field that lets you specify what you want to replace the item with. Enter your values, hit OK (or whatever command your program uses), and all your mistakes are gone in a flash.

Of course, I need to throw in a word of caution. The Find & Replace feature isn't all that bright. It'll search for the replacement item and replace it whenever it finds it - regardless of whether it makes any sense.

What am I talking about? Let's say you used the number "7" throughout a document then decide you should have used the word "seven" instead. You go to Find & Replace and use "7" as the replace criteria and "seven" as what to replace it with.

Well, if you have a number like:

3752

Find & Replace will "fix" it so it looks like:

3seven52

So use with caution.

Some of your better Find & Replaces have a "Find Next" or "Replace Next" button that let's you go through your document and approve each replacement. Might be a better way to do it unless your 100% sure that the term you're replacing isn't going to be a problem.

One more thing. Sometimes Find & Replace will let you Find & Replace in a selection. So, you select the area you want it to work in and let it go wild. Again, not all Find & Replace features support this, so don't be disappointed if you're doesn't.

SkipThe Recycle Bin

Every now and then you need to really delete a file. Right now.

Well, most people delete the thing, then go to the recycle bin and remove it from there. It works, but there's a better way.

Next time your 100% sure, without a doubt, for certain, that you want to delete a file, hold your Shift key down while you delete. The file will be deleted - skipping the Recycle Bin completely.

Here I am, right-clicking and deleting a file that was just begging for it. You can't tell, but I'm holding down my Shift key so it bypasses my recycle bin and is tossed into the digital abyss...

Who knew you could wield such power with such a simple key?

Adding Shortcuts to the Taskbar (and making them bigger)

I know, this is kind of a basic tip for you long time Windows users, but we've been getting a lot of questions on this lately. So, if you want to add icons to your taskbar - or make the ones you already have on it bigger, read on!

OK, first we'll talk about getting the icons there in the first place. By default, win 95/98/ME/2000 users using Explorer 4.0 or better should see at least a few icons on their taskbar. The part of the taskbar where these icons sit is known as the "Quick Launch Toolbar".

To add more icons to it, just drag them from the desktop or your Start button, Programs area.

I recommend a right-click drag and drop instead of the normal procedure if you're dragging from the Programs menu area. If you drag with your left mouse button, you'll move the icon from the Programs menu to the Quick Launch Toolbar. It won't be available from the Start button, Programs area anymore. If you right-click and drag, you'll get a menu with an option to "Copy here". Select that and you'll keep the original icon under the programs menu plus have it on the Quick Launch Toolbar.

XP Users:

XP, by default, has the Quick Launch Toolbar shut off. I don't know why they felt the need to do this, but they did. Anyhow, in order to use and drag stuff to it under XP, you'll need to do the following:

1. Right-click the Taskbar and select Properties from the resulting menu.

2. A Taskbar and Start Menu Properties screen will materialize. Make sure you're on the Taskbar tab.

3. Uncheck the "Lock the taskbar" checkbox and check the "Show Quick Launch" checkbox.

OK, that should take care of putting your favorite programs on the Quick Launch Toolbar.

Now, by default the icons are tiny. Too small if you ask me. To make them bigger, just right-click a blank area on the Quick Launch part of the Taskbar and select View, Large Icons. That'll turn your baby icons into grownups.

Launch Multiple Programs

Have you ever needed to launch multiple programs? Normally, you hit the Start button, Programs, then select the program you want to run. Once that one starts, you go back through and repeat the process for the next program. Well, here's a better way.

Next time you need to launch more than one program from your Programs menu, hold down your SHIFT key while you click the program's icon. The application will launch, but you won't lose the Programs menu and have to start all over.

So many tricks, so little time.

Windows Searches

Do you have a particular folder you're always rummaging through? Maybe your "My Documents" folder? Well, do I have a trick for you!

As you probably know (or will know here in a second), if you right-click a folder and select Find or Search, you'll get a Find (or search) box that is automatically set to look in the folder you were just right-clicking.

So, if you try this with your My Documents folder, you'll get a search or find box with the "look in" area already set to My Documents.

Well, let's take that to the next level by putting shortcuts on your Desktop for folders you search through a lot. That way, you can do the trick above without hunting around through Explorer or My Computer. Just right-click the shortcut and you can select Search or Find from there.

How? It's easy:

We'll pretend you have a folder in My Documents called "Work." Here's how you would set up this trick:

1. Open Explorer or My Computer. Head to the folder you want to make a shortcut to. In this case, "My Documents\Work."

2. Right-click, hold and drag the folder to your Desktop. When you release the folder, you'll get a little menu with several options. Choose "Create Shortcuts Here."

That's it! You should have a shortcut on your Desktop for your "Work" folder. Just right-click it and select either Find or Search from the resulting menu.

Cool huh?

Of course, you can double-click this shortcut to jump directly into the folder.

More Double Clicking Ease

So, are you tired of double clicking? Frustrated with not being able to double-click fast enough? Wish you could cut out that second click? Well, you’re in luck, There is a way!

Our first stop is the Control Panel, which is where you control almost everything about your computer. Go to Start / Settings / Control Panel.

With your Control Panel open, look for the Folder Options icon and double-click on it (this will be the last time you have to double click). The Folder Options box will open. Now, look at the last section on the bottom called ‘Click Items as Follows.’

Here you have two options; ‘single click to open an item’ or ‘double click to open an item’. Select ‘single click to open an item’ and click Apply, then OK.

Congratulations! You are now an ex-double-clicker. But remember that as double clicking is replaced with single clicking, single clicking is going to be replaced with just setting your mouse pointer over the item. Have fun!

Doc Scraps

Here's a cool one. With this tip, you can stick a "scrap" of information on your Desktop. You can then take this "document scrap" and paste it into another application - without opening it up (although it doesn't work on everything).

First, you'll need to use a program that supports OLE2 drag and drop. Programs like Word, MS Paint, Wordpad, Corel WordPerfect, and most other popular programs will support this function.

OK, now, here's how to do it.

Just highlight the text you would like to copy. Drag it to your desktop (don't copy it, just highlight and drag). A "Document scrap" will be created on the desktop for you.

You can make as many of these little "scraps" as you like. They can be text or images.

Here's a picture of one:

Oh, and you may want to right-click them and re-name them too - makes it easier to figure out which one is which.

To use these document scraps, either double-click them to open, or drag them to where you would like to have them inserted into your document (again, this only works with some programs).

A really cool use for this is if you use the same text over and over. For example, maybe you have some information you occasionally e-mail to people and find it annoying to be constantly opening up your word processor and all the associated copying/pasting.

Well, if you right-click the document scrap, and select "Copy" from the resulting menu, the info in that scrap is placed on the clipboard where you can paste into your e-mail message (again, not every program supports this). I use this little trick all the time to send out info to commonly asked questions.

Deleting Unwanted Programs

It seems like I get questions all the time asking how to remove / uninstall programs. So, here's the step by step procedure:

1. The first thing to do is click the Start menu, Programs. Then hunt for the program you want to delete. Oftentimes, you'll find an Uninstall program under it's program group.

2. Another way would be to click the Start button, Settings, Control Panel. Then open the Add/Remove programs icon. You'll see a list of programs that Windows can remove from your system. Just click the one you would like to remove and hit the OK button.

3. If neither of the above work, you can always go to the program's folder and delete it. However, there is no guarantee that the program was confined to that folder. It could have other files distributed throughout your computer.

4. Finally, you might consider a program like QuickClean. Once installed, it watches which program files go where and can remove unneeded files for you.

Keep in mind that some of the files that get placed on your hard drive when you install a program are basically updates to some of your existing files. So if you are uninstalling something and get a message saying not all the files from a program could be removed, it may be due to the fact that other programs also use these files.

CTRL Your Folders (and more)

Do you ever find yourself scrolling through a huge folder? If you need to get to the beginning or the end quickly, just press CTRL - HOME. If you want to get to the end, click CTRL - END.

Hey, that's not all!

This little trick works on more than just folders. If you use the HOME key in a word processor, it probably goes to the beginning of the line you're currently working on. If you hit the END key, it should head to the end of the current line. Use HOME & END with the CTRL key in a word processor to go to the beginning or end of a document. Again, this should work, but it depends on your word processor.

Open With

Have you ever downloaded a file, went to open it, and ended up with a dialog box asking you what program you want to open the file with? What does it all mean? Glad you asked :-)

When this screen presents itself, it normally means one of three things (none of them particularly good).

1. You don't have a program on your computer to open up the file in question. Most programs automatically set up file associations when they are installed, so if you're getting this error, you may not have the software that is required to open the file. If that is the case, your next step is to figure out what kind of program you need to open the file then download / purchase it.

2. The file isn't meant to be opened. The majority of the files that live on our computers are either program files or files that support programs. So if you're just hunting around with Window Explorer to see what you can open (mess up, play with, etc), you're probably going to be disappointed. Most of these type of files aren't really meant to be opened. In fact, if you do find a way to open them, they would probably look like gibberish.

3. The last possibility is that you do have a program on your machine that is capable of opening the file in question. Unfortunately, with all the different file formats floating around out there, it will be a guessing game trying to figure out what program can open a particular file. Normally I start with Windows Notepad. Many of the files on your computer are little more than text files that don't use the "txt" extension. So, I scroll down the list on the Open With screen until I see NotePad.exe. I click that, hit Open, and see what happens.

OK, so what can you do?

If you get a file from someplace and aren't able to open it, your best bet is to contact the people who you received the file from and ask them what application (program) is used to open that type of file.

Single Click Icons & Folders

It seems like one of the most common questions I get is "how can I set
my icons for single-clicking?"

Well, it's easy. Here's how:

1. Right-click your Start button and select "Explore".

2. Once Windows Explorer opens, hit the Tools menu, Folder Options.

3. Click the Web Style radio button and hit OK. You may be asked to
confirm you really want single-click icons.

That's it. You should be opening programs with a single-click.

If you want to be more particular, select "Custom" from the folder options screen and hit the settings button. You can control just about every aspect of your icons and folders from there.

Full Path

Have you ever gotten a little lost while using " My Computer "? Before you get buried in another deep directory, tell Windows to show the full path in the title bar. I know, it doesn't sound all that profound, but it really comes in helpful. Here' how:

Open My Computer (or any folder) and click the Tools menu, Folder options.

Click the View tab and check the "Display full path in title bar" checkbox.

That's it, you're only a glance away from knowing where you're at in any directory structure. Here's a sample of what your title bar (now new and improved) should look like when your hunting around in your computer:

Selection Savvy

Ever need to make more than one choice in a list box? (A list box is basically an item by item list. You've probably seen them on web pages or in computer programs you've used. Outlook Express uses a list box to display its list of messages.)

Here's how:

1. Click the first item on the list you would like to have selected.
2. Next, while holding down the SHIFT key, click the last item you would like selected.

That's it, the first and last selected items are now highlighted, as well as everything in between.

OK, so what if you just need specific items selected, not whole sections?

That's easy too. Hold down the CTRL key while making your selections. As long as the CTRL key is down, you can click select individual items on in a list box.

Note that not all list boxes support multiple selections. You can experiment with this technique using the list of e-mails in your inbox with a program like Outlook Express.

Memperbaiki Flashdisk Rusak (Write Protected)

Oke, singkat saja..

Buka Command prompt, start->run->”cmd”

masuk ke drive USB, misal : e: / f: / g:
ketik : chkdsk /f –> kenapa /f ? search di cmd, ‘help chkdsk’
Pilih yes(y) untuk melakukan proses checkdisk setelah kompi di restart
Lakukan restart PC, biarkan proses berlangsung setelah winlogon

Flash Disk mengalami Write Protect

  1. Masuk ke DOS Prompt Windows XP dan ketik CHKDSK /F Drive letter : (chkdsk /f v:)

Ban ShutDown:A trick to Play on Lamers

This is a neat trick you can play on that lamer that has a huge ego, in this section I teach you, how to disable the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Dialog Box. This trick involves editing the registry, so please make backups. Launch regedit.exe and go to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane look for the NoClose Key. If it is not already there then create it by right clicking in the right pane and selecting New > String Value.(Name it NoCloseKey ) Now once you see the NoCloseKey in the right pane, right click on it and select Modify. Then Type 1 in the Value Data Box.

Doing the above on a Win98 system disables the Shut Down option in the Shut Down Dialog Box. But on a Win95 machine if the value of NoCloseKey is set to 1 then click on the Start > Shut Down button displays the following error message:

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

You can enable the shut down option by changing the value of NoCloseKey to 0 or simply deleting the particular entry i.e. deleting NoCloseKey.

Instead of performing the above difficult to remember process, simply save the following with an extension of .reg and add it's contents to the registry by double clicking on it.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

\Policies\Explorer]

"NoClose"="1"

Tricks Window

It's another window tricks.

Again, editing the registry can be dangerous if you don't know what your doing, so do this at your own risk.

This next trick allows you to decide whether windows should display the blue screen of death or if it should auto restart when the system crashes.

Go to Start > Run > regedit

In there, navigation to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet

\Control\CrashControl

In there will be an option called AutoReboot, right click on this key and choose Modify, set the Value Data to 0 for blue screen, or 1 for auto-restart.
